There are three ways to logon to Windows 7: if you have removed password protection, you will only need to select the user name (Windows profile) under which you want to login. If you have customized Windows 7 to bypass the logon screen and password prompt, you will not have to do anything, and be able to access Windows without supplying a password at all. And finally, the standard way to logon to Windows 7 is to choose a user name and type the corresponding password. But what if you can't remember your Windows 7 password? This tutorial gives you a few tips on accessing your computer even if you have lost your user account password.
Logon to Windows 7 without password
Here are a few tricks to login to your Windows profile if you forgot your password:
- The easiest way is to use the password hint: when you add new users in Windows 7, you have the option to not only add password protection for that particular account, but also to choose a hint that will be displayed when you unsuccessfully try to logon.
- If you have not setup a password hint, or cannot remember your password despite the hint, the next step is to use a password recovery disk (or "password reset disk"), if you created one - while Windows 7 will possibly remind you a few times to create one, it is not mandatory.
- If you don't have a password recovery disk but still can't remember your Windows 7 password, see if another Windows user on that computer has "administrative privileges" (i.e., either is an administrator, as opposed to a standard user, or knows the administrator's password). This is because a computer administrator can change another user's password. This would allow you to get back into Windows after the administrator resets your password to something new.
- The final solution, if none of the above worked out for you, is to really dig deep and try to remember your password, including checking notes or hints you may have written on paper. Because if none of the options above work, and you need access to Windows 7, you may have to re-install the operating system from scratch. But before you do, read our final tip that works on recovering files and notes when you can't remember your Windows 7 password.
- If you feel tech savvy enough, or know a geek who owes you one, ask them to burn an Ubuntu Linux "Live CD", which they can pop into your computer before restarting them, which will allow them to access the filesystem without having to logon to Windows.
And there were a few tips and tricks to try and use if you can't remember your Windows 7 password! Of all of these, hopefully one will work without your having to do a clean install of the operating system.
